Conditions for Classroom Technology Innovations


I found this article difficult to get into initially, but ended up ‘enjoying’ the topics being discussed, and the findings.

How effective the integration of technology into a classroom programme relies on 3 main factors, as outlined in the image below:


The teacher was found to be the main factor relating to successful implementation. They need to come with not only technological knowledge of what they are doing, but also an understanding of how this can work in their environment. Some excellent examples were made of how teachers knew their programme, but not how it could be used in their school. It was also found that to be successful, what was trying to be achieved had to closely resemble the teachers own pedagogy. Trying to use technology that did not reinforce your own beliefs, caused conflict and ultimately failure.

What a teacher was trying to achieve also has a bearing on success. If a teacher is using technology in a  way that is similar to what they are currently doing, then they are more likely to succeed. However those teachers that attempted to create something new found it difficult as they had to drastically change their own programme. A higher failure rate was observed in those that had large distance from current practice. This was also observed if the project was against he current thinking/practice of the school as implementation would be near impossible. Access to technology was also a contributing factor – having to buy a lot of new gear and get it setup, inhibited the success, however using the available technology lead to success.

A minor, but still important factor, was how the people resource assisted, or inhibited, the implementation of the project. The peers you work with, the administrators of the school, and the access to helpful support staff all effected the outcome of the project.

To me I found it reinforced the idea that it is better to use the technology you have first, and use t to enhance what you already do. This makes it easier to implement technology into a programme. With each successful implementation, students are exposed to a ‘new’ way of working, and teachers are more willing to introduce new innovations/technological practices and technologies as it does not become ‘something else’.

A thought I had about the research was the time in which it was done – a lot of the sources quoted were from the 90’s, and the paper itself from 2002. At this time technology was limited to desktops mainly, would it look different in todays age with iPads, iPhones, TV screens in classrooms, easy internet access, free web based programmes etc? Or is it still relevant that teachers will either try to perform large projects distant from their own practice, and when they fail they are unwilling to try again?

Well worth a read, even though it can be hard going to begin with.

Reflective Video Task

For week 3 we need to:

“Film your reflection on the activities you provide for your students/staff on using their 21st Century Skills. Use at least one relating ITL rubric as a tool. Make sure the video is no longer than 3 minutes. Publish your video to G+ Community with the hashtag #21CSreflection and your location specific hashtag.”

Ideas – Use of ICT for Learning – Students use the computers and the programmes to create new knowledge about 3D Designs and Programming. They must use computers as both ideas cannot be done on any other machine. The product has an authentic user, be it a 5 yr old, a family member or a friend, depending on the project chosen.
